But Shalson didn’t just buy the properties and run the pubs, no instead he came up with a genius plan of which he claimed was a ‘three win scenario’.

Shalson claimed that he had found a business model with regards to pubs of which will maximise profit as well as increase the asset value of the property and benefit the customer.

“We buy a tenanted pub with a beer tie. We release the tenant from the tie so they have freedom of choice where to buy their beer from, put them on a market rental and give them a lease of up to 25 years. It gives them freedom where they buy beer, an incentive to grow their business’ (Peter Shalson, 2005; The Telegraph)

Well, Shalson’s theory has appeared to have worked as he has now acquired many a pub within his business venture, with the biggest acquisition being 545 pubs in 2005 for an estimated £162.5million from Punch Taverns, thus bringing the Pubfolio’s investment value up to £250m and some 800 pubs on his books. As his pubfolio is so impressive, in 2004 it became number 10 in the UK’s largest pub estate. The day to day running of Shalson’s pubfolio is done out of Country Estate Management whilst the directors of the company focus on more deals in the City, so it appears that the only way is up for Shalson’s ever increasing ‘pubfolio’.

On from his days of selling encyclopaedias, Shalson went to work for a tiny braids and trimmings firm known as Braitrim. He started off selling coat hangers to other small businesses.

In 1978 Shalson put down a small down payment of £10,000 which ensured him a stake in the company. He then over the following 20 years took this small company and expanded on it, eventually landing a huge client base which included such stores as Marks and Spencer’s, Tesco, Woolworths, Littlewoods and C&A. Making Braitrim an international supplier of not only coat hangers but of packaging and accessories as well.

In the year of 1998 Braitrim was sold to Mercury Asset Management (a private equity arm of Merrill Lynch), for a staggering £85million, with Shalson retaining a 20% stake of the company. He disposed of this holding in 2001 when Mercury sold Braitrim to ‘Spotless Group’, an Australian business service for £120million.

The ‘spotless group’ still continues in to be an internationally known manufacturing brand. However, they have now renamed the Braitrim brand to that of Braiform which according to the Braiform people themselves ‘signals the global integration of our Braitrim, Plasti-form and Spotless Plastics businesses’ (Braitrim, 2010).

So there you have it, through sheer determination, inspiration and a lucky market niche, Peter Shalson made this tiny firm into an international manufacturing brand.

Peter eventually bought Braitrim and turned it from a small business into an international packaging brand within 20 years.

Further investments included the acquisition of 20 pubs. The profits helped Shalson build up to taking over 540 pubs which were added into a successful chain known as Punch Taverns.  The speed of these takeovers astounded the industry and Punch Taverns became the 10th largest chain the UK within a year and a half.

Between 2001 to 2004 Shalson invested in an internet service provider called Brightview  (which also became a major player in the UK) and property entrepreneurs.

Most recent involvement was buying majority stake in TradIndex, a bet spreading platform which helped major corporations gain access to thousands of worldwide platforms from one location.

Peter’s financial success with business ventures allowed him to not only have one the UK’s biggest wedding party (with Elton John hired as a private wedding singer) but it also allowed Peter Shalson to help out numerous charities and charitable organisations.

His proudest achievement has been creating ‘The London Academy’, an academy that helps children of all abilities and backgrounds achieve incredible GCSE results which progresses them onto further education.  The academy helps children that may have missed out on a good education due to financial difficulties.  A sponsorship of £1.5 Million was given to the charity by Peter alone.

Charitable donations include the ‘Osteopathic Centre for Children’ which helps out Autistic Children, ‘The President’s Club’ which helps out sick children and centres in the UK.
